Introduction: Water & Sanitation (W&S) services are essential in the fight against poverty. TheWorld Bank Group?s mission in the sector is to help our member countries ensure that all their people, including the poor, can gain access to efficient and sustainableW&S services. The task is a huge one and requires strong and sustained engagement: one billion people still lack access to safe water, two billion lack safe sanitation. Progress will require large investments and extensive progress in the areas of pricing, sector finances, regulatory development, water institution sustainability, private sector participation, and community management for small systems to break the cycle of low revenues, asset disrepair, poor service and slow expansion. The Bank Group has several tools to support the sector: International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and International Development Association (IDA) sovereign lending; International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Multilateral International Guarantee Agency (MIGA) support to private investment; advisory services - through country policy dialogue, strategy formulation, theWorld Bank Institute (WBI), other partnerships such as theWater and Sanitation Program (WSP), the Business Partners for Development (BPD) water cluster, and the Public-Private Infrastructure Advisory Facility (PPIAF).
